Like every person in this world many of us set new resolutions to follow through with each new year. Whether it be to eat healthier, to read more or to stop reading trashy magazines, they all have one thing in common in order to succeed. Commitment.
No matter the set goal, it comes down to commitment to making it happen. We can easily commit to things such as tv shows, boyfriends, and school. But when it comes to committing to a new goal for new years what makes it so difficult to follow through?
According to Psychology Today, the reason why they don’t work is because many of us think too big. The typical and most common resolution in my opinion is to exercise more, or eat better. Resolutions like these can be difficult to achieve especially since it involves creating a brand new habit, which is already hard enough. But combined with the pressure of it also being a new years resolution can be even harder on us.
In order to achieve a resolution effectively, starting small is the way to go. The saying “baby steps” never rang so true. Jumping in head first with anything connected to changing a habit or creating a new one is not going to work. Taking baby steps and adding one small action is the most effective.
Say your resolution is to exercise more, making yourself go to the gym everyday for two hours could shock the body, and thats the last thing you want. Instead, maybe add a small task to your already formed daily routine. Such as, instead of walking your dog for 5 minutes, walk them for 15. Baby steps will eventually lead you to your bigger goal.
